Driving Cross Country? Stop in Bardstown, KY

A short detour between Louisville and Lexington will lead you to Bardstown, Kentucky.  It is a great spot to eat at Talbott Tavern, which is said to be the oldest western stagecoach stop in America (people that have stayed there include Abe Lincoln, Daniel Boone, and King Louis Phillipe).  It is a highlight of a trip otherwise characterized by endless stretches of highway dotted with fast food chains.  The food is classic South and the servers are characters.

And if you happen to pass through during the day, consider visiting My Old Kentucky Home State Park.  Tours are given by guides in full antebellum South costume.  Admission is free

Looking To Volunteer and Stay For Free?

Help Needed at Eco-lodge in Costa Rica
You can take a vacation or you can travel.  This blog is more interested in travel, meaning you want to experience more than a margarita in your hand. Travel should be an escape from your every day routine, getting up close with the people and/or surroundings.  One of the best ways to do this (and do it cheaply) is to volunteer.

There are many agencies that will set you up with  volunteer work abroad, at a price.  However, there is a great site out there that lets you find work directly, for practically nothing. On Workaway,  you can read postings from hosts advertising a wide range of jobs such as:
  • gardening
  • language practice
  • child care
  • art projects
  • animal care
  • technical support
  • see site for more. . .
Volunteers are typically compensated with room and board in exchange for working part-time.  Each opportunity is different and can be negotiated.  Perhaps the best part is the variety of choice.  You pick what you think is a worthwhile holiday in terms or work, location, and conditions.  You can string together several stints for an extended trip which could be a much richer experience than, say, backpacking Europe on your own dime.  A working holiday could also provide internship type experience that looks good on a resume, especially for recent graduates without work experience.  Check out Workaway now.

Paradise on a budget: rent your own island on the cheap

Lauren Viera finds her own private paradise at an unbelievably affordable price.

It takes a while to sink in.

A few hours pass, and it still feels surreal, as if you're merely house-sitting, borrowing someone else's wealthy lifestyle, waiting for her to return and relieve you of your time in paradise.  Read more

Vacation on the Island of Sardegna

An Italian friend of ours posted some photos today of a beach town on the island of Sardegna (aka Sardinia).  It's called Villasimius and is located a 50 minute drive from the port city of Cagliari.

There are many beautiful beach towns in Italy and you'd be fortunate to spend a week (or summer) at one.  According to Momondo, you can fly to Cagliari from Rome for as little as $122 pp roundtrip.  A car is necessary if you want to explore the island and apartment rentals are reasonable.  We found a listing for a sweet little studio in the middle of town for just $480 per week, within 1km of the beach.  Feel like a local and explore the neighborhood.  It will be a great escape.

Mexico

I just booked a great deal from Salt Lake City to Cancun for 5 nights, all-inclusive for $578/person. That's with an upgraded hotel room. I searched hotels.com, expedia.com and orbitz.com before finally settling on a package from travelocity.com. All were quite similar, but travelocity had the right flight times and right hotel, the Grand Oasis Viva Beach Resort.

Although the US dollar is weak against many other currencies, the Mexican peso is not one of them. Cancun may sound like a party destination, but you're in easy access to see Chichen Itza, one of the seven wonders of the world. That plus the beautiful caribbean beaches makes for a perfect getaway.
